چکیده
The Air Force Research Laboratory, Airbase Technologies Division (AFRL/RXQ) is engineering and evaluating the Transportable Waste-to-Energy System (TWES). This trailer mounted system will convert military base waste and biomass waste streams to useful heat and power. The Department of Energy (DOE) Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) is a TWES funding partner. The first stage of the project is a suspension-type combustor (furnace). The furnace has been built and tested. A key feature of the furnace system is its unique patented combustion coil design. The design is intended to maximize ablative heat transfer by increasing particle residence time near a radiant ignition source. The innovative features of the design are targeted at ensuring that the system can be highly fuel-flexible to convert a variety of biomass and other waste streams to energy while demonstrating very low emissions. In 2008, the unit underwent two days of emissions stack testing using established Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) testing protocols. During the testing, extensive real-time data were also collected. This paper presents the data and corresponding analysis of the recent emissions testing performed while utilizing dry wood chips as a control fuel. Key combustion efficiency factors, such as carbon monoxide emissions and nitrogen oxide emissions are presented. The authors also provide commentary on the results for next generation units and the use of this mode of energy conversion for small scale systems. Combustion of some Thai agricultural and wood residues in a pilot swirling fluidized-bed combustor
This paper reports a comparative study of burning Thai rice husk, sunflower shells and fine rubberwood sawdust as well as co-firing of the sawdust and shredded eucalyptus bark in the swirling fluidizedbed combustor (SFBC). All experiments for firing individual fuels were performed for the combustor heat input of ∼300 kWth. However, in the co-firing tests, the fuel mixture was delivered at a fix...
متن کاملHeat Recirculation Effect on the Structure of Wood Dust Flame Propagation
A model for heat-recirculating micro combustor is developed. It investigates the structure of laminar, one-dimensional and steady state flame propagation in uniformly premixed wood particles with considering the effects of heat recirculation caused by configuration of micro combustor. The flame structure is divided into three regions: a preheat-devolatilization zone where the rate of the gas-ph...
متن کاملEffect of Heat Recirculation in Biomass Flame Stability within a Cylindrical Micro-Combustor (TECHNICAL NOTE)
Flame stability inside a cylindrical micro-combustor was studied. Considering occurrence of heat recirculation, the respective relations were written and with parameters such as motion speed of reactants, flame propagation speed and thermal conductivity of the combustor’s wall, flame stability and its location inside micro-combustor were studied. It was found that for each thermal conductivity ...
متن کاملMercury emissions during cofiring of sub-bituminous coal and biomass (chicken waste, wood, coffee residue, and tobacco stalk) in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed combustor.
Four types of biomass (chicken waste, wood pellets, coffee residue, and tobacco stalks) were cofired at 30 wt % with a U.S. sub-bituminous coal (Powder River Basin Coal) in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed combustor. A cyclone, followed by a quartz filter, was used for fly ash removal during tests. The temperatures of the cyclone and filter were controlled at 250 and 150 degrees C, respectively...
متن کاملReducing Ultrafine Particle Emissions Using Air Injection in Wood-Burning Cookstoves.
In order to address the health risks and climate impacts associated with pollution from cooking on biomass fires, researchers have focused on designing new cookstoves that improve cooking performance and reduce harmful emissions, specifically particulate matter (PM). One method for improving cooking performance and reducing emissions is using air injection to increase turbulence of unburned gas...
